Job Description:
Our client, a major packaging manufacturer, is actively seeking
an Environmental, Health, & Safety Manager for its plant in
Roanoke, Virginia.
Candidates should have familiarity with EH&S programs
and experience implementing process and procedures along with a
proactive management style and highly-visible floor presence.
This job will have the following responsibilities:
Coordinate day-to-day implementation of industrial health,
ergonomic and wellness programs with a high-level of employee
engagement.Provide hands-on, effective supervision to ensure
associate adherence to best practices to safety procedures during
regular production and key downtime maintenance activities.
Determine EHS site goals and necessary programs with site area
leaders and managers.Effectively influence them to be strong EHS
Leaders within their areas of responsibility.Responsible for review
EHS policies, programs, and metrics to meet the goals and
objectives of the business and fully integrating this into the
plant management system. Prepare, implement, and operate updates to
the site EHS management system and programs and implement the
necessary policies and procedures with a risk-based and structured
approach. Stay ahead of the federal state, local laws (OSHA, DOT,
EPA, FMLA, ADA, etc) as well as
company policies to ensure the site is in compliance with the
regulations. Initiate changes to practices and procedures to
support compliance and ensure the vital permits and licenses to
operate the plant are in place. Ensure effective occupational
safety and health programs are maintained with external support
from health care providers, insurers, community health, and
regulatory agencies. Responsible for ensuring safety amongst
associates in the facility relating to weather, environmental,
machine safety, or ergonomics. Ensure compliance with local, state
and federal regulations regarding environmental discharges from the
facility. Ensure compliance with waste shipment regulations. Train
associates and department leaders as necessary. Provide oversight
and direction for day-to-day compliance with applicable air,
hazardous waste, wastewater, and storm water permits, plans,
regulations, etc. Ability to interpret environmental laws and
permit requirements, stay abreast of the changing regulatory
landscape, and analyze the various options for complying with new
regulations and permit requirements. Ensure all work performed
aligns with safety, environmental and hazardous waste procedures,
plans, policies, and requirements. Provide effective leadership and
overall management of site EH&S associates. Conduct jobsite
assessments, focusing on unsafe conditions and unsafe work
behaviors; ensure appropriate action is taken to correct
deficiencies. Lead Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA), EPA, NDEQ, etc. inspections and investigations. Monitor and
maintain records and permits of hazardous, biohazardous materials,
and waste in compliance with all applicable local, state and
federal regulations. Lead Emergency Response Team in case of
Safety, Health, and Environmental hazard
Lead the Environmental, Health, and Safety improvement
plan.Effectively partner with the plant manager and HR manager,
among others, to build a robust safety culture.
Qualifications & Requirements:Bachelor's degree and seven (7) years
of experience managing EHS issues in a manufacturing environment.
An equivalent combination of education and experience will be
considered.Strong interpersonal skills -
accessible and approachable Ability to utilize business sense and
creativity to develop new ideas, approaches and solutions Ability
to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses
of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
Knowledge of business and management principles involved in
planning, resource allocation, cost analysis and budgeting, people
management, and leadership guidance Ability to utilize and train
employees on technology, processes and procedures Excellent verbal
and written skills necessary in order to persuade and influence
decision making of individuals, groups, or work teams, and to
communicate difficult issues In-depth experience of OSHA
regulations and requirements Experience in managing/handling
compliance issues, permitting for all media, OSHA/EPA programs,
regulatory reviews, permit preparation, reporting and record
keeping. Experience in evaluating/interpreting OSHA, EPA and DOT
regulations and relevant industry standards (SQF, GMP, ISO,
etc.).Experience with Federal, State and local Worker's
Compensation law Prior experience establishing proactive Ergonomics
Program preferredExperience using Microsoft Office, including the
ability to create basic reports, documents, presentations and
spreadsheets in MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint Preferred
Skills and Qualifications: BS degree in Environmental, Occupational
Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering or other science
field 10 years' experience in a manufacturing environment with 3+
years as a dedicated EHS leader. Experience managing multi-shift or
continuous operations high-speed manufacturing, paper converting,
chemical/plastics processing and packaging industrial experience
Lean/Continuous Improvement experience Professional Engineer (PE),
Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Certified Safety
Professional (ASP/CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
certification
